As an employer you should now be aware of The Fire Precautions
(Workplace) Regulations 1997.
These regulations took effect on December 1st 1997. This
legislation was amended by the Fire Precautions (workplace) (Amendment)
Regulations 1999 which came into force December 1st 1999, along with the
Management of Health and Safety Regulations 1999.
Now every organisation with five or more employees must undertake an
assessment of the fire risks in the same way your company undertakes
Health and Safety assessments in order to maintain a safe working
environment.
These requirements include:
Carrying out a Fire Risk Assessment
The provision of fire fighting and fire detection equipment
The provision of adequate means of escape
The production of an effective fire action plan
The training of all staff - Fire Safety Awareness
The training of Fire Wardens
The maintenance and recording of all provisions
Not only is it an offence not to have a fire risk
assessment, you may also find that you are not covered by your insurance.
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (RRO)
for England and
Wales became law on 1st October 2006.
The Fire Precautions (Workplace) legislation 1997 and Amended 1999
are just two acts that are now superseded.
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order is a risk based approach
allowing more efficient, effective enforcement by the fire and rescue
service and other enforcing authorities.
The reform creates one simple fire safety regime applying to all
workplaces and other non-domestic premises.
The regime is risk assessment based with responsibility for the
fire safety of the occupants of premises and people who might be
affected by fire resting with a defined person.
